marvellyous:  Do you define yourself as a graphic designer or an illustrator? Whichever one it is, why do you define yourself as such?

What’s the difference? Honestly, I don’t know. If I knew the answer I might feel comfortable defining what I do one way or the other.

Is it necessary that there be a significant difference?

I suppose that if I absolutely had to answer, I would do so like this: I treat each job individually, and take whichever approach seems best to me at the time. Some pieces will involve more illustrative elements while others might benefit from a more graphic, idea-led treatment. I try not to think about what I would usually do or what the client is expecting of me, but what the best possible solution to any given problem is. If that solution requires a skill that I don’t have, I either try and learn it or get somebody else to help me out.

I’ve always considered illustration and graphic design (along with photography, animation or any other creative discipline for that matter) as tools in a toolbox. The more tools you have, the more versatile you are and the more things you can build. Why bother trying to confine yourself to one specific tool? You’ll only hobble yourself with limitations.

I worked with Studio Ghibli and Mondo to create these two posters for one of my favourite movies. I still can’t quite believe this, it’s such a huge honour.
My Neighbor Totoro is a 20x36 8-colour screen print. It’ll be for sale from Mondo soon and, as usual, I will have some signed APs for sale at some point later. View high resolution
